4 Tips to Pick Your Degree

Like the sun that always rises, God is always there to guide you to the right degree and career path for you

Wondering which degree program to choose? You’re not alone! These four tips can help guide you to make the decision that’s right for you.

1. Study your options

Every degree from BYU-Pathway Worldwide will help you gain skills in a field you choose to study, such as business, technology, communication, health, family, and professional studies. Take some time to review all the available options .

2. Think about your end goal

Since your degree program will help you develop skills to get a better job, you want to choose a degree that fits your personal needs. Consider asking yourself important questions like these to discover what that is:

  • What skill(s) have I always wanted to learn or improve?
  • What am I passionate about?
  • Does my family or community have a need I could help with?
  • What's most important to me in a career: working with people, being active, working remotely, supervising or managing others, and so on?
  • Which degree and certificates will help me reach my career goals?

3. Make changes as needed

Remember, there are usually several degree options that can work for you and your goals. The job market is somewhat flexible; you may find yourself studying in one field, then working in a different one after graduation.

If you've given it some thought and still don’t know what to do, move forward with your best decision and find comfort knowing you can always change course later on. Even if you change your field of study, the time you spend learning how to learn and developing soft and hard skills is never wasted!

Switching degree programs may affect the length of time it takes to graduate, though, so be sure to work with an advisor and understand the requirements before doing so.

4. Pray for guidance

Deciding on a degree program can be difficult, but you don’t have to do it alone! Karolynne Cesar, a student from Boa Vista, Brazil, shared, “Since childhood, whenever people asked me what I wanted to major in, I wasn’t sure what to answer. I decided to pray and ask God for guidance in finding the right major for me. My answer came seven years later when I enrolled in BYU-Pathway.” Karolynne’s answer took time!

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught, “The gradual increase of light radiating from the rising sun is like receiving a message from God ‘line upon line, precept upon precept.’” 1

You may not receive a clear answer all at once, but just like how the sunrise always rises, God’s guidance and direction will always come. As you pray and seek His help, have faith He will direct you in your educational journey.
